It is the year 10,191 AD. The most valuable item in the universe is the spice Melange. The planet Arrakis is the primary source of this commodity and it is now the setting for Machiavellian scheming by the Emperor Shaddam IV. The houses of Atreides and Harkonnen are sworn enemies and the Emperor plans to eliminate Atreides by pretending to side with them, just to have Harkonnen destroy them. The ruler of House Atreides is Duke Leto Atreides. His son and heir is Paul Atreides, a man the Emperor is most particularly keen to kill.
Written and directed by David Lynch and based on the Frank Herbert novel, Dune has heaps of potential but never comes close to living up to it. There's a grandness to Lynch's vision for the movie, demonstrated through the special effects and scene settings, which makes you initially think this could be really good. However, it doesn't take long for you to realise there's no substance behind the style.
The plot is all over the place and largely incoherent. One gets the feeling that Lynch figured that all the viewers had read the book, so no need to join the dots. Heaps of information provided, not much of it makes sense or links to other information. The plot just seems to lurch from one development to another, often in nonsensical fashion.
Then there's the dialogue. Or should I say 'internal monologue thought aloud. The actual dialogue is pretty poor but it is the thought narration that is most laughable / irritating. It fills the movie, hardly a scene goes by without it and it is just empty and pretentious, adding nothing. By the third time I heard Kyle MacLachlan whispering "The Spice! The Spice" I was ready to shoot the TV, and he got to say it a lot more after that.
Throw in some weirdness just for the hell of it and the whole thing becomes quite laughable. Not sure what was the most bizarre, there's so much to choose from: the cat scene, Sting's space age budgie smuggler/codpiece, the Baron's hovering and random antics, to name but a few. Well, it is David Lynch, so par for the course, I guess.
Big-name cast but all of them get to look like amateurs due to the poor script and demented direction. They must all look back and cringe at how cheesy they and the whole thing looked.
